Periodontal disease is extremely common in cats and dogs.  Over 70% of dogs and cats have some level of dental disease by the time they are 3 years old.

It starts with plaque that hardens into tartar. Tartar above the gumline can often easily be seen and removed, but plaque and tartar below the gumline is damaging and sets the stage for infection and damage to the jawbone and the tissues that connect the tooth to the jawbone. Periodontal disease is graded on a scale of 0 (normal) to 4 (severe). Early detection and treatment are critical! Advanced dental disease can cause severe pain and discomfort for your pet. If dental problems are not addressed early, this can significantly compromise the health of vital organs. Annual Dental Cleanings help prevent the severe cases of tooth loss from dental tartar, jawbone degradation, and infection.

What to look for:

  • Pets should not have bad breath - if yours does, it may be time for an exam and a dental cleaning to evaluate your pets needs.
  •  Discolored teeth (brown or yellow)
  • Inflamed or bleeding gums
  • Loose or missing teeth
  • Excessive drooling
  • Blood on chew toys or in water bowl
  • Soreness when chewing
  • Irritability
  • Reduced appetite / Weight Loss
  • Problems keeping food in mouth
  • Bloody saliva

Full Mouth Dental Radiographs Performed on every patient

Dental Prophylaxis and Periodontal Treatments Performed

  •  Veterinary dentistry begins with an oral exam of your pet’s mouth by a veterinarian, and the pre-anesthetic blood work is run.
  • An intravenous catheter is placed.
  • Your pet is placed under anesthesia and monitored extremely closely by our educated staff with ecg, pulse oximetry, capnograph, blood pressure, and manual parameters consistently taken.
  • Full mouth radiographs (x-rays) are performed to evaluate the health of the jaw and the tooth roots below the gumline because most dental disease occurs below the gumline where you can’t see it.
  • A thorough dental cleaning and evaluation are performed under anesthesia. Dental cleaning includes scaling (to remove dental plaque and tartar), tooth polishing, and charting any abnormalities and stage of periodontal disease. It’s similar to the process used on your own teeth during your regular dental cleanings.
  • We are here to help you help your pet stay healthy, and ward off easily preventable diseases. When we work together with professional dental cleanings and preventatives you can use at home, we are helping your pet live a longer, healthier life free from Periodontal Disease.
